If you’re in this boat, my advice is to bring your unplugged electric somewhere with nothing else (except maybe a tuner which you can read my opinions on here) and just start playing. The sound of the un-amplified strings will be enough to let you know if you’re on the right track, and you’ll be building up calluses and muscle strength as you go.
