The Different Type Of Gas Used For Welding

  • Argon (Ar) Used in many welding processes, from the inert noble gases…
  • Oxygen (O2) We breathe Oxygen and it’s fairly important to all other life on Earth…
  • Helium (He) Helium has a unique property that it doesn’t freeze – you can get a liquid state but not a solid one.

Argon gas for MIG welding is the most commonly used and mixed gas among these gases. Argon is a type of inert gas that ensures reaction to other gases resulting in welding defects does not occur. Together with its nonreaction to other gases, argon fulfills shield welding needs.

The tri mixes tend to help out on thin wall applications where increasing heat heat input to get better wetting of the weld tends to blow through, in any other application you can match it with a dual mix, by increasing your heat input and travel rate.

MIG Welding Gas for Stainless Steel Welding Welding of stainless steel is typically done with C2 or 2% Carbon Dioxide and 98% Argon. In some cases there is tri-mix shielding gas containing 90% Helium, 7.5% Argon, and 2.5%Carbon dioxide.

Tri mix gas for stainless steel MIG welding. For years I've been getting by doing repair welding on stainless exhaust systems using 308L wire and an 80/20 Argon CO2 mix. It does OK for repairs to stainless systems that have been in use for awhile and for installing new weld in catalytic converters.

They commonly run 90% Helium/7.5% Argon/2.5% CO2. The large percentage of helium aids in the stainless weld bead to wet (or to laydown flat). Also helps to reduce spatter on SS. I would not use this gas on steel I would recommend staying with a CO2/Argon mix of anywhere from 15% to 25% CO2.

Tri-Mix Gas 90% Helium, 7.5% Argon, and 2.5%Carbon dioxide; MIG Welding Gas. Welding of stainless steel is typically done with mixture of Argon and Carbon Dioxide gasses that can be as low as 2% carbon Dioxide to as high as 25% carbon Dioxide. In some cases there is tri-mix shielding gas containing 90% Helium, 7.5% Argon, and 2.5%Carbon dioxide.

The choice of shielding gas made a lot of difference to the ease of welding. Argon/CO2 mix or Argoshield result in easier and neater welds given an unrestricted choice of gas, but a MIG welder can be used with CO2 (pub gas) if you can put up with increased spatter and a less steady arc.

The Helium Tri Mix research and gas recommendation for stainless short circuit welds had a dramatic impact on the global MIG weld industry, and the reality set in for Carbide and for the other major gas company executives, that the introduction of a so called unique three, or even two part MIG gas mix, would be a good marketing tool to attain not only new competitive weld gas business, but was also a great tool to go after the competitive MIG weld equipment, MIG and flux cored weld wires ...

You can use carbon dioxide or gas mix for portable MIG welders. Gas Flow Rate for MIG Welders. Usually, you can keep the flow rate of shielding gas from 12 to 14 lpm (liters per minute) or 20 to 25 cubic feet per hour. This flow rate is set on the tank’s gas regulator to control the gas availability at the welding arc during the process. Gas ...
