Those who are looking for an answer to the question «Why is my electric smoker tripping gfci?» often ask the following questions:

👉 How to check gfci tripping on electric tank heater?

The main reason that the code does not require GFCi protection for electric water heaters is as I stated. If you think that is a real world issue, you have until the first Friday in November 2017 to work up a "public input" and substantiation for a 2020 code change. Another reason is the fact that the metal tank of the heater is connected to the EGC.

👉 Why does my water heater electric keep tripping the gfci?

The scenario: You noticed your electric water heater tripped the circuit breaker. So you went to your electrical panel and reset the breaker. But then a little later your water heater’s circuit breaker tripped again. So why’s this happening?

👉 Why is my electric smoker tripping the breaker?

Reasons for Electric Smoker Tripping Breaker 1 – Lack of Weatherproofing If the circuit keeps tripping and there’s no other external cause, the issue may be with your electric smoker itself. In this case, it’s likely to be an issue with rust, moisture or another unwanted material inside the appliance.

As you can see, there are multiple reasons to protect your electrical wire out of GFCI outlets. So what causes your smoker to keep tripping is not a single issue. There would be many. For example, damage to any appliance, electrical abnormal shocking, water leakage, moisture, etc.

I do not believe your smokers are the problem. I believe you are dealing with aged wiring, and a GFI that may have been repeatedly tripped before you got there. Every time a circuit breaker trips, it gets weaker. Same with a GFI. Eventually they become "Nuisance trippers". They just trip if somebody farts near them.

The reason a circuit breaker repeatedly trips when powering an electric smoker or any other appliance is because something potentially dangerous is occurring. The purpose of a circuit breaker, whether it’s part of your home’s power control center or an individual GFCI outlet device, is to shut down.

Turn it on and often the GFCI will trip. So, first, check for wiring failure as stated previously, then try minimizing the length of smoker cord. As a last resort, even try plugging in the smoker to another GFCI circuit to check for tripping.

The GFCI is tripping for a reason. Older ones sometimes tripped for false positives, but that's very rare with modern fuses/interrupters. Especially if the outlet interrupts with the same appliance every time then the problem is the appliance not the outlet. Do some troubleshooting on the grill to find out if you can repair it, or need to replace it.

Plugged in the smoker, set the time, set the temp and doink! The GFI tripped. Hmm. Tried again. Same thing. Ok, tried a different plug. Same thing. Tried a non-gfi plug. Same thing. Searched online for this situation and found a lot of people have trouble with their smoke plugged into a GFI outlet. I never had trouble in 3 years until today.

If it trips the breaker when the element is being powered on it indicates that there may be excess current flowing either due a faulty heater element or to a lesser extent moisture in the control board or problems with the electrical wiring in the cabinet.

My smoker is also tripping the GFCI. Can’t even contact Masterbuilt for questions as they’ve shut offices down due to virus. Sad. Will look for another company to buy smoker.
