49 posts. Report post. Posted May 28, 2016. I have a clicking noise coming from the back of my water heater. It is a 10 gallon Atwood with gas and electric. it just does it occasionally just enough to be annoying. The water heater is only 4 feet from the head of our bed. It doesn't sound like the gas trying to light. I never use the gas option.

Pockets of water get trapped in the sediment/scale at the bottom of the hot water heater, turn to steam when it heats up, then "explode" causing the noises you are hearing. You could try draining the water heater to get some of the sediment out, but honestly it's probably too late for that - might want to have a pro come out and take a look at it.

If the water heater is making a screeching noise, this is an indicator of a water flow restriction issue. Most often the inlet control valve is to blame. When this valve is not fully open, water is restricted and the screeching occurs. An easy fix for this common water heater noise is to simply check to ensure the valve is fully open.

If your water heater is making this type of sound, you certainly have every right to be concerned. One reason your system could be making this noise is because of a leak somewhere in your water heater’s line or pipes, which is more common for PVP and CPVC plastic pipes that can break relatively easily.

A rumbling noise coming from the water heater usually means the aluminum anode rod in your water heater is corroding. The aluminum corrodes and then clogs the heater drain which results in a low rumbling noise. The way to fix this issue is to drain and completely flush out the water tank.
