Off Grid Solar #41: Running the Dryer on Solar

When you run any electric appliances like refrigerators on your solar system, try not overloading the fridge with food. That way you keep its power consumption efficient and the food cold. A refrigerator’s load depends on how much food you keep in it, the age of your appliance and how long you leave it open

When the sun is shining during the day time you will use electricity from your solar panels and the surplus will be fed in the electricity grid (export), but when the sun is not shining (at night and during monsoon) you will pull electricity from the grid (import) the same way you do before going solar to run your appliances.

I do know you can get Sun Frost refrigerators and freezers if you don't wan to use propane for your fridge/freezer. They're pricey though. Also you can get a portable electric dryer that runs on 110v but they're not as efficient and take longer to dry (like easily a couple of hours). Also you can get an electric stove that runs on 110v.

Solar panels charge the battery bank so you can use it to power the inverter and your hair dryer. If you want to use solar panels to run a hair dryer, it will take a 5 x 300W solar array.

Re: Using an electric clothes dryer off-grid 'coot - we use the clothes line in the summer too. We only use the dryer in the winter, or when it's unsuitable outside for drying clothes. Before we got the dryer we used to have a clothes line in the laundry room and the heat from the wood furnace would dry them. But they got really stiff.

For peak energy performance you need to make sure that the appliances running off of your solar panels are as efficient as possible. Unfortunately, the appliances we use for everyday convenience and comfort demand quite a bit of energy to operate but by using high-efficiency appliances you can drastically reduce the required amount of energy to power your home.

Electric Dryers. Electric dryers can be powered by solar power, but standard dryers usually run at about 240 volts and pull a lot of energy. It is best to find a low-voltage dryer or, if you’re skilled with wiring, convert your high-voltage dryer to a lower voltage for less power consumption.
